Folate is an essential nutrient that is needed for normal cell division and DNA repair. Folate is usually taken as folic acid, which must be reduced in the body to the metabolically active form 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to be absorbed into the bloodstream and utilized by the tissues. Those needing high amounts of folate can avoid getting a build-up of unmetabolized folic acid in the bloodstream by taking 5-MTHF. Some who have a genetic variation that hinders the use of folic acid may also find 5-MTHF is preferable. 5-MTHF donates the methyl group needed to convert homocysteine to methionine. Vitamin B-12 is also required for the catalyst methionine synthase. This methionine synthesis cycle maintains methylation of DNA and regulates homocysteine metabolism. Folate and vitamin B12 are also required for the synthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe).
