Smilax has a long history of traditional use in Central and South America. It has been traditionally prescribed for various conditions such as psoriasis, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, detoxification, hormone regulation, and as a general tonic and blood purifier. It has also been historically used to address syphilis, gonorrhea, and other STDs, dating back to at least the early 1800s. Additionally, it has been used for leptospirosis. Smilax contains sarsaponin, a unique component that has been found to effectively bind endotoxins.
